Reading time will be 20 minutes this week

Monday – Expectations for final draft; self-evaluation for speaking/listening learning goal

Tuesday/Wednesday – Goodreads update and review; Working on draft of memoir


Thursday/Friday – Final draft due by the end of class - develop one of the memoirs written for homework into a polished piece of writing

Rubric for Memoir final draft:

250-500 words
Typed - we will write and edit in class
12 point font size
Title required
Double spaced 
Conclusion should share lesson learned

Monday – discussion on setting with “The Yellow Wallpaper” short stories. Expectations for reading short stories by the end of September

Wednesday – Prewriting; What kind of short story do you plan to write and plot outlining emailed to Luttke.


Friday – Review email response. Work on rough draft of short story

Monday - Parts of Speech presentation. Glass Castle excerpt. Hmwork:  Write about a family incident and what you learned from it.

Tuesday/ Wednesday - Why isn't a compound complex sentence a run on? discussion and writing. James Earl Jones memoir excerpt. Identify parts of excerpt - tone, text structure, word choice, dialogue. In class writing: What is your theme song? Hmwork:  Write about an event or experience that changed you.

Thursday/Friday - Hyphens and Dashes, what are they used for besides dividing words? discussion and lesson.  Share theme song. Unbroken excerpt.  Identify parts of excerpt - tone, text structure, word choice, dialogue. Show excerpt from the movie Unbroken.

Creative Writing week of September 21

Monday - read "Good Little Boy Who Didn't Prosper" by Mark Twain. Discussion and writing about the story.

Wednesday - Character sketch assignment. Work on beginning of short story.

English 11 week of September 14

This week will begin class with 10 minutes of silent reading time

Monday -
Classes 1,5,7: “What is a memoir?” article, discussion, and questions
Classes 2, 6: Library orientation and book selection

Tuesday/Wednesday – Receive single subject notebook, Memoir unit vocabulary, What is Truth? – discussion and writing; 6 word memoir – understanding and writing. Homework: Write about a bad habit that you have. Why is it considered bad? Why do you do it? Write in your single subject notebook



Creative Writing week of September 14

Monday - Writing: Who is you favorite fictional character? Class discussion. Notes on short story. Short Story assignment rubric. Brainstorm ideas for project.

Wednesday - Twilight Zone episode "In Search of an Exit". Class discussion. Writing: An event in your life that is mysterious. Class discussion. Hm:  Email Ms. Luttke two short stories you plan to read before the end of September - include title and author. 

Friday - Read "The Foghorn" by Ray Bradbury. Plot diagram handout. Continue brainstorm of project ideas.

Welcome to English 11! This year's focus is on College Reading and Writing.

You will need


  • A three ring binder
  • Loose leaf paper
  • Writing instrument (pencil or pen)
  • Handbook (provided on the first day of school)
  • Single Subject Notebook (provided by Luttke)
  • Pleasure reading book (by Monday, September 14)
You will need a 
  • Google account (Gmail - I recommend your first name . your last name)
  • Goodreads account (created or updated and add me as a friend: Alexandria Luttke Byron Center)
