English 11 week of October 26

Monday - Connotation and Denotation evaluated. Reading update for pleasure reading book. 
       Remember, you must complete and review 4 books this semester. 

Tuesday/Wednesday - Peer observation received and reflected upon. Plickers review - Grammar. Fix up strategy - Trust the Author and go back. Reading practice - SAT type test.Homework: Peer observations for Speaking and Listening goal.

Thursday/Friday - Grammar review. Question stems - comprehension and use. Use pre-test and and identify the question stems and purpose.

Next week end the marking period. We will have a final assessment on the grammar elements we studied - parts of speech, subject/verb agreement, pronouns, hyphens-dashes.


Creative Writing week of October 26

Monday - listening to and evaluating short stories.

Wednesday - listening to and evaluating short stories.

Friday - listening to and evaluating short stories.

If there is extra time, students will work to improve their writing focus area of either Character or Setting.

The end of the marking period is next week!

English 11 week of October 19

Monday - Pronoun review. Prior knowledge practice - using a new passage, students will identify what they see and their prior knowledge about the topic before they read the passage.

Tuesday/Wednesday - Pronoun group work. Identify a fix-up strategy and work on connotation and denotation.

Thursday/Friday - Pronoun practice. Identify a fix-up strategy to help students infer

Next week we will work on grammar review of parts of speech, hyphen and dash, subject/verb agreement, and pronouns. The week of November 2 there will be an assessment on these items.

Creative Writing week of October 19

Monday - Receive evaluated short stories back. Identify items that need improvement and a plan to improve. Reflection on short story unit. Decide on presentation order for reading short stories.

Wednesday and Friday - Short story presentations with peer evaluations

English 11 week of October 12

Monday - PSAT announcements from Mrs. Williams. Subject/Verb agreement group discussion. Vocabulary for Reading Strategies Unit.
Hmwrk: Go to http://www.readingsoft.com/index.html and complete the timed speed reading test and the comprehension test.
Email Luttke your words per minute (WPM) and the percentage you receive on the comprehension test.

Tuesday/Wednesday pm - Subject/Verb agreement group activity. Introduction of a Reading Strategy. 
Hmwrk: Take notes in your single subject notebook from Seven Strategies of Successful Readers at http://www.slideshare.net/pilgrimlibrary/seven-strategies-of-successful-readers-9911545

Wednesday morning all juniors are required to take the PSAT. Information provided to the students as well as posted at homeoftheshamrocks.org


Thursday/Friday  - Subject/Verb agreement individual work. Introduction of a Reading Strategy.


Creative Writing week of October 12

Monday - Self revision on short story draft. Share story with Luttke for teacher editing.

Wednesday - Correction from Luttke's editing. Peer editing expectations.  Share story with 2 others for peer editing - must be completed by Friday's class.

Friday - Editing wrap up. Final self review with rubric. Printing story for Luttke's final evaluation.


Next week everyone will be reading their stories in class!

English 11 week of October 5

Monday - PSAT information with Mrs. Williams

New unit: Reading Strategies

Unit will include the learning goals:

1. I can determine reading strategies that will help me comprehend difficult.
2. I can recognize the difference between denotative meaning and connotative meaning.
3. I can determine author's point of view and explain the purpose for writing the text.
4. I can participate in a discussion by posing questions that connect the ideas of several speakers, responding to questions, and elaborating on my own ideas and/or the ideas of others to ensure a full range of positions on the topic or issue.


Tuesday/Wednesday - Memoir final draft returned - students may revise and resubmit. Pretest for Reading Strategies Unit. Hyphen/dashes review. Subject/verb agreement

Thursday/Friday - Learning goal for Speaking and Listening. Review of pretest data. New groups assigned - discussion on what need to learn.



Creative Writing week of October 5

Monday - Work on rough draft of short story. Email: How has your story changed from outlining to rough draft? 

Wednesday - Work on rough draft of short story; tentatively planned as a wrap up day for drafts

Friday - Begin revision of short story
